Description

Gora is a medium-sized urn-shaped terracotta vessel. It is used principally to store water, and can also be used to store dried foods such as dried chilis or dried broad beans. Some Rohingya people also plant vegetables such as bitter gourd in madir gora. Because of the natural filtering and cooling properties of terracotta (the porous surface facilitates evaporation), water stored in madir gora stays cool in the hot months, and people say that it tastes sweeter than water stored in vessels made from other materials. When dried vegetables are stored in the madir gora, the item is first wrapped in plastic before it is placed inside the vessel. Coconut coir may be used to cover it. Madir gora can be plain or be decorated with designs of flowers or leaves etched on its surface.
