Description

Sowna is black chickpeas, a popular breakfast and afternoon snack in the Rohingya cuisine. Generally eaten fried, it is ubiquitous and available in tea stalls and from street food vendors. During Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting, every Rohingya family prepares sowna (fried black chickpeas) for Iftar or the opening of the fast at sunset. They eat it with fiyazu (lentil fritters) and muri (puffed rice) mixed with tomatoes, cucumber, onions, potatoes, lemons, coriander and green chilies. Sometimes they also have the chickpeas with noodles.
