Description

This is a portrait of Fatema, a Rohingya embroidery artisan for the RCMC. It was painted by Farzana Ahmed Urmi, a Bangladeshi artist-in-residence for the RCMC.

Fatema learnt the art of fultola (embroidery) at a UNHCR training office in Arakan. Soon she was making hand fans, headscarves, dresses and selling them, giving her earnings to her parents. At the camp, Fatema could not continue with fultola because of the lack of materials but once she heard of the RCMC embroidery group from other women, she too joined them.
