Description
Fulgas means flowering plant. This fulgas has been crafted from the plastic cooking oil packaging from the monthly food baskets distributed to each refugee family by the World Food Program, scraps of old clothing, bamboo sticks, wire and red thread. Rohingya women and girls make fulgas to beautify their homes, especially rooms meant for guests. This craft is a testament to Rohingya women's love of decorative arts (e.g. embroidery, henna, make up), and the resourcefulness that characterizes this community, which has lived on the margins with limited opportunity, support or material resources for generations. Other examples of recycled paper and plastic crafts are fadi (mats) and school bags made from used plastic coffee sachets.
