Description

Tel’or gani is a traditional bullock-driven oil-press, used for cold-pressing seeds or nuts such as mustard, sesame, peanut, sunflower, etc. The press consists of a deep wooden mortar in which seeds are placed and a tall, ball-headed wooden pestle snugly fitted inside. The pestle is then lashed to a bullock with a wooden joint, and the tel’or gani operator drives the bullock in circles to labouriously press the oil. The oil drips through a small hole in the base of the pestle and is collected. Tel’or gani are usually made from the strong durable timber of the jackfruit tree. This tel’or gani, complete with miniature wooden bullock, is a miniature model made for the CMC by Rohingya carpenter Soyoud Hossen.
