Description

The mosoit is a mosque, which plays a central role in Rohingya Muslim community life. Every village will have at least one mosoit, where Rohingya men gather to pray.

A mosoit is typically a large open room with a long baranda (balcony). The mosoit will be carpeted and worshippers may also bring in prayer mats. Every mosoit will have an Islamic leader called an Imam, who leads the devotees in prayer, and a Muezzin who gives the Azaan (call to prayer), for the five daily prayers that are obligatory for adult Muslims. Every Friday, the Muslim holy day, men and boys of the community will gather for the juma salah, the congregational Friday prayer, and to listen to the Imam give the weekly sermon. Rohingya women and girls pray at home.
