Description

This is a portrait of Umme Habiba, a Rohingya embroidery artisan for the RCMC. It was painted by Farzana Ahmed Urmi, a Bangladeshi artist-in-residence for the RCMC.

Umme Habiba is an embroidery artisan who learnt the art of fultola (embroidery) in Arakan from her sister. At the camp, she worked for RCMC where her favourite projects were “Missing Persons” and “Pillow with Dream”. Although she felt happy to become financially independent through doing fultola, after getting married in summer 2020 Umme Habiba discontinued working for RCMC, since her husband’s house was faraway. Still, she continues her fultola, hoping to inspire others around her.
