Description

The sarang ghor is where organisational decisions are made. Every village has a sarang ghor to administer its affairs and to represent the transparent nature of its governance, the single-storeyed wooden structure has no walls. It is kept open so that anyone can step in and participate.

Activity is managed through the formation of committees and the head of the committee is the most influential person in the village at the local level. Traditionally a man is the chief decision-maker and everyone is required to comply with his instructions. Rohingya villages are protected through a voluntary sentry scheme where responsibilities are divided among members of the community and duty days assigned in the form of a roster. The sarang ghor is where these decisions are made and it also serves as a guard shelter at night.
