Description
Morichor fada is a stone grinder, traditionally used by Rohingya households to grind spices into paste for cooking. Whole spices, edible roots or bulbs (e.g. onion, ginger, garlic, turmeric) are first soaked in water, then ground on the morichor fada in a labor-intensive process typically performed by women as part of the family❜s kitchen prep. The surface of the morichor fada is pitted to create a rough grinding surface, and a heavy stone mortar is rolled back and forth like a rolling pin until the desired consistency and texture is reached. Morichor fada are traditionally chiseled from natural rock, but cheaper versions are made from cement are now available. Morichor fada are an integral part of the Rohingya kitchen. Spices prepared in this traditional way are preferred to readymade spice powders for their freshness and flavor. Price: Cement morichor fada: 4,000-5,000 Myanmar Kyat ($2-3 USD) Stone morichor fada: 7,000-8,000 Myanmar Kyat ($5-6 USD)
