Description

Shathe dulai nathi loiyo ki (My Granddaughter, what were you swinging on your way) is a Ailashiari song, performed in the Rohingya camps for the RCMC by Rohingya musician Ahmed Hossen.

Ailshiari is a popular genre among Rohingya farmers as the songs serve as their work songs. In the agricultural fields, the farmers divide themselves in two groups and compete each other to achieve the daily target faster than the others. Ailshiarisong lyrics usually inspire the group members while they mock the other group members in friendly rivalry. For a fair play, both the groups are assigned with the same amount of crops to harvest, or the same amount of land to sow the seeds. Each group has at least one singer who knows the lyrics by heart, and everyone else follows along. Dhol (drums), and other musical instruments are also used to create the tempo. Sometimes, the groups do end up quarreling as they refute each other’s arguments. Nonetheless, Ailshiarisongs play a key role in increasing rice production.
