Description

Lamba kula is a basketry fan used by Rohingya people to winnow grains, beans and seeds. Winnowing is the process of separating inedible chaff from the grain. A portion of rice (or wheat, mustard seed, black bean, etc) is placed in the lamba kula, and tossed briskly in the air. The light chaff catches and drifts in while the heavier grain settles quickly. In this way, the grain is cleaned. This lamba kula is handwoven from flat pieces of split bamboo, and the outer rim is reinforced with cane. It is an inexpensive tool costing 100-150 Myanmar kyat (about $0.10 USD).
