Description

Howror baari moudur baari, barbar gele jarar baari- is a common Rohingya proverb about social manners. It translates as, the in-law’s house is a house of honey, but if you visit repeatedly, you will get bit by a broom. For the grooms, visiting the in-law’s house is a matter of delight as they are offered the highest hospitality possible with good food, amenities, etc. However, when the visits are repeated, even in Rohingya households, the hospitality will drop in quality. It is like the English proverb, Fish & visitors smell in three days.

In the illustration, we can see the groom and the annoyed mother-in-law with a broom while the family is at the dinner table.
