Zueer is a stiff, cape-like garment used as a raincoat. Consisting of a long scoop-like bamboo frame covered with plastic, leaves or thatch, zueer is worn on a user’s head, with the scooped end placed on the forehead and the open end draped over the neck and body. Zueer made from leaves or thatch is preferred to plastic zueer as the natural material allows better ventilation and temperature regulation, keeping the wearer’s body cool. Farmers and paddy workers wear zueer during the summer and rainy seasons while working in the fields as the garments protect from the wind, sun and rain while keeping hands free to work.
