Description

Fan’or duwan or betel leaf shop can be found in every neighborhood and market in Rakhine (Arakan). Betel leaf is beloved among Rohingya of all generations. It is traditionally served to welcome guests. Usually, big betel shops situated in markets have a big gudam (storeroom). The ingredients for assembling betel leaf wraps — e.g., masala, tobacco, betel leaves, and lime – are kept on a table at the front of the store. The seller sits behind the table. In front of him, there are stools for customers. Many sellers sell cigarettes, candies, and packaged snacks. The shops mostly have wooden floors and bamboo walls with tin roofs.

The frame and floor of this miniature shop are made of wood. The wall is made of bamboo, and the roof with nipa palm leaves.
