Description

The denyawaddy - 2 is a two-storey diesel-engine powered wooden motorboat, built to ply the deep rivers of Arakan. It is equipped with two engines, including a back-up in case of mechanical trouble. The bottom level holds cargo. The upper levels are for passengers.

The mighty denyawaddy - 2 was brought from China by the Myanmar government in 1990. It carries goods and passengers twice a week from Akyab (Sittwe) to Buthidaung. For the Rohingya people, it is a very famous boat. It can carry 500 passengers, each paying 2,000 Myanmar kyat as fare.

There are five denyawaddy ships running the Akyab-Buthidaung route: Denyawaddy - 1, Denyawaddy - 2, Denyawaddy - 3, Denyawaddy - 4, and Denyawaddy - 5. These boats can have two or three levels and are typically 20 - 30 feet in length.
