Description

The denyawaddy is a diesel-engine powered, wooden motorboat built to ply the deep rivers of Arakan. It has two engines, including a back-up in case of mechanical trouble.

A denyawaddy can have two or three levels, and is typically 20-30 feet in length. The bottom level holds cargo. The second level is for passengers. The shop and engineers’ room are on top.

The denyawaddy modelled here is used to run commodities down the river from Akyab (Sittwe) to Buthidaung. It can also be used as a fishing boat.
