Real is an x-shaped stand used to read and recite the Holy Qur❜an. Traditionally, real are handmade of wood, often carved with elaborate designs, using motifs from Islamic art, including minarets, stars, and crescent moons. Nowadays, plastic real are also available. In a Rohingya household, a Holy Qur❜an is treated with great care: It cannot come in contact with the floor and, as per Islamic religious practice, a person touching the Qur❜an must have performed the wudu (ritual ablution). The use of the real to read the Qur❜an, and the beauty of the traditional, wood-carved real attests to the importance of religion in Rohingya culture.
