Description

This is a portrait of Shomsida, a Rohingya embroidery artisan for the RCMC. It was painted by Farzana Ahmed Urmi, a Bangladeshi artist-in-residence for the RCMC.

Shomsida learnt the art of fultola (embroidery) from her sister. In Arakan, she used to take orders for embroidering pillow covers, scarves and handkerchiefs and with her earnings she would buy makeup and clothes. At the camp, she has contributed for the RCMC collection by stitching in various projects. Her favourite colour is purple and she is known for incorporating it in many of her pieces as well as clothing – whether it is a burka or an umbrella.
