Description

The nahol-jowal is a traditional bullock-drawn wooden plough set used by Rohingya farmers to till the fields. It consists of a nahol (ploughshare) connected to a jowal (yoke) set on the shoulders of a pair of bullocks. The nahol can be interchanged with a third piece, called a shañta, a harrow-like attachment used to level the soil after it has been broken up by the nahol. This tool is common in Arakan as, even today, tractors and other expensive modern equipment are not readily available to small-hold Rohingya farmers. This nahol-jowal-shañta plough set was handmade by Rohingya carpenter Ekram as a miniature for the CMC collection.
