Description

This is a portrait of Dildar Begum, a Rohingya embroidery artisan for the RCMC. It was painted by Farzana Ahmed Urmi, a Bangladeshi artist-in-residence for the RCMC.

Dildar Begum is an embroidery artisan who learnt the art of fultola (traditional Rohingya stitching) from her cousin. In Arakan, she embroidered pillow covers and headscarves, as well as taught her younger sister Umme Habiba the craft of fultola. At the camp, Dildar enjoys doing fultola for the RCMC embroidery group, where she has made many new friends. Her favourite embroidery project was “My Beloved Person” because she learnt to embroider the face of her nani (maternal grandmother) who could not leave Arakan.
