Description
Gora dow, also known as a mas thorkeri kudede dow (cutting tool for fish and vegetables), is a long, curved blade attached to a platform held down by the foot. The gora dow, found in kitchens throughout South Asia, differs from western knives in that it is held stationery while the food item is manipulated by both hands. This cutting method allows for good control; a large fish can be easily scaled, gutted and portioned, and smaller vegetables, fish, meat etc. similarly chopped and skinned with equal ease. The tool is simple to use: Squatting on the floor, the user holds the blade steady with one foot while moving the item to be cut up, down and across. Most Rohingya prefer the gora dow to a handheld knife.
