Description

Sirni is a sweet dish, which Rohingya people make whenever they want to share their happiness or good news. This dish is traditionally known as soitto fir er sirni (food of a truly pious man) and the story behind it goes back centuries - Once a tooth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was knocked out in a fight. When his friend a fir (pious man) heard the news, he deliberately knocked out his own teeth as a sign of loyalty to the Prophet. Since the fir could no longer chew without his teeth, he concocted the sirni as it was the only thing he could eat. This is how the dish came to be known as soitto fir er sirni. Rumour has it that only Muslims can eat sirni as it is indigestible by people belonging to other religion.
