Description

This is a portrait of Shobika, a Rohingya embroidery artisan for the RCMC. It was painted by Farzana Ahmed Urmi, a Bangladeshi artist-in-residence for the RCMC.

Shobika is the youngest embroidery artisan at RCMC. In Arakan, she excelled in academics but could only study till grade three before having to walk to the refugee camps of Cox’s Bazaar with her parents. She learnt the practice of fultola (embroidery) from her sister Yasmin, after coming to the camps. Now she spends her time embroidering for RCMC projects and wishing she can one day return to Arakan and play with her friends.
